Cardboard + fiberglass + steel = home built Notchback (pics inside)....
....Or whatever you wanna call it.Got the idea back in Dec, sat on it til July. Finally feel safe enough to post.Anyway, started w/ a spare hatch (minus glass). The window frame & decklid (no skin) as the foundation.Along with 1/4 dia. steel rod that i cut/bent/welded to the OEM parts. Its fiberglass over cardboard over steel. Its rough, but you get the gist of it......hopefully.
Slightly more finished, but still lots more block sanding needed.

VERY COOL MAN!!!!!
I like it, cant wait to see it finished. I would consider a different spoiler other than stock to even it all out. A hawks 3" or even a bird aerowing would look cool.

I can't see how this will flow with any of the lines on your car. That being said, it looks like you've done a nice job so far and I'd love to see the finished product mounted up and painted. Sub'd.

I don't really wannt jump on the "that won't look good" bandwagon, but it might be too different to flow with what I have seen of your car in the past.
I hope you prove me wrong and this becomes one of those cool unique parts that people ask where they can get one for years to come.

Re: Cardboard + fiberglass + steel = home built Notchback (pics inside)....
Its already been fitted on the car, a while back when the fiberglass was much rougher.I think i got pics on my cell, but i wanted to take some w/ a real camera!
As for the "so called lines".Well you gotta use your imagination i guess. The long sweeping panels "flow" with the sail panels. The top is an extension of the sheet metal behind the t-tops.The qtr panels roll over at the top, so the flat area outside the sweeping panels is a continuation of that. The spine in the center is just for show.
The spoiler's gonna stay though.I dont want too much notchback/ta influence. Its already tall enough, since my 84 had the shorter style. This was the type w/ the 3rd brk light.Which i already filled in.
To be honest i still dont know if ill like it myself. This was something i visualized in my head & just went ahead & did it.No plans, drawings, blueprints, whatever.Maybe ill love it in primer, maybe not, who knows.I wish id done the window different though, oh well! Im well past the 300 hr mark!

Kinda liking the c7 notchback, but that silver split window...not so much.
Here is one i have from a few weeks back.Got another b4 fiberglass.
Plus whats under all that cardboard/fiberglass.
Underside, before fiberglass.

Looks good, I've bean wanting a notch back, but haven't found one I liked for my car, your design isn't quite what I'm looking for but you have giving me a great place to start. So thank you, I can't wait to see your finished

I gootta say I admire your fabrication skills, when you can visulize a part in your head and actually build it that is talent. I would like to see it primed dark and fit on the car to see the flow, either way great job on the fabrication.

Re: Cardboard + fiberglass + steel = home built Notchback (pics inside)....
Not too offended bout the idiot part, but the rest! Not sure how its a disaster! Pretty sure ive got it "pulled off" too.Everything mounts like before since im using the OE deck. That piece mounts the struts/spoiler/plastic trim/latch & rubber stops. The OE hinges come welded to the window frame, so thats no issue.Only feature i lost is defrost. This thing weighs just under 42lbs (Vs 91lb) so the old struts are too strong now.
Variety is the spice of life.I had variations of this design visualized & dont know why i decided on this.Maybe cause it was the most exaggerated of all.Post up your ideas.
Thanks, Guess im the visual type.I actually work better from a mental picture than dimensions. Its been fitted a few times for reference, the above pic was one of the first.Im going for Satin black.

I too clicked on this thread for mere entertainment factor. However, I have to say I'm very impressed with your fabrication skills so far. Can't wait to see the finished project. It reminds me a lot of the time I spent visiting with the guy who made a replica of the original '64 Charger concept car. He used 2x4's, fiberglass, plywood, you name it, making that car. When it was finished, you'd never have been able to tell it wasn't factory.
Take your time with the final smoothing, finish, and painting. That's what'll make the difference between a hack-job and a really nice bit of fabrication.

I think when you get it finish sanded and primed, it'll look good! I'd like to see it primed up and installed....till you paint it of course, then get more pics.

I think for this to look really good is going to require an SS fiberglass hood. They have similar contours.

I wasn't expecting to see a mess because of the impression I have of you from your many other posts that I have read. It is much better than I expected though. I like the idea and the general style. I would have had a little less of the sting ray type look but it is definitely worth showing as that is a great example of what can be done with the proper patience and inspiration.

Just wondering if it would have been easier to use the glass as a template by laying the fiberglass over it & working from their. Regardless the technique, it looks pretty awsome!!!!!!

Re: Cardboard + fiberglass + steel = home built Notchback (pics inside)....
Guess I should have left ”cardboard” out of the title! Im thinking people were expecting another ”rollout t-top shade cover” type of thread.
Half the new decklids surface is flat.Unless you want to duplicate the OE glass. It probably would'nt make a good mold.
Appreciate all the compliments, thanks guys.

Personally, I am digging this. Just the daringness to do it is wicked cool and he idea is cool too.
I say finish it , paint put on car n then see if you like it...
Id have to say its inspiration, id like to see it with a shorter n less center angle of the sail

It'll get done....eventually, but i havent done squat since mid october.Got sick, then DST made it too dark by the time i got home, then it got cold.So i put it away for the time being. No fun sanding in the damn cold.Im a warm weather wimp.Anyway, i will finish it, but no real paint til the car gets painted at least.
Couple more pics i found.

I agree with a post above-if you run this hatch then you need the 4tg gen style SS hood so go with it. Dude you do have some skills and I feel ya about the cold-that is why nothing has got done on my RS.

What do you plan to do about the window opening? Going to cut a piece of tempered glass to fit or lexan etc? And how will you attach it?

84 1LE....I like what you did..I was redoing my notch back..When I came across yours..And now I'm going todo what you have...If you look at my notch back you can see it has a big back window...Its just about a 1/2 in smaller then a s10 window...My plan is to use a powerslide window from a 98 s10...

Re: Cardboard + fiberglass + steel = home built Notchback (pics inside)....
I have no idea who made mine...it looks like its from some 3rd world country. ..fiberglass is thin, its hollow, worped ...doesn't seal..when it rains my back well fills up with water. ..it was to long I sanded the top by he hinges flat to get it closer to the car ..no it to short....
My buddy was going to make a plug out of it...but after working on my car for almost 2 years..I came across yours...and like that plan better .your way is less material. ..he wanted to make a mold from mine ...then make a hatch from the mold.....
I do not have a build thread ...my pc is sick...I got the update for my phone ( galaxy s3 ) and now I can't upload pics....

Extremely interesting. I just stared at it for like 10 minutes trying to decide what I think. (still not sure)
Its funny how there are so many styles of hoods you can get. Changing the style of the trunk hatch seems to be a little more tricky. Love your fab work though.
How is the headroom in the rear seat now? Did it change any? That's the only thing I can think that may stop someone from doing this.
