Did they really tape a towel around the rear end to stop it from leaking?

Yes on the towel lol. All I remember on the tires was 9 inch wide. I looked but forgot. The entire suspension is sock car style(truck arm) and the engine is set way back.

love iroc style cars, they would have been awesome as more of a real series then just a race of champions style event, but i guess that makes it more rare lol

Did you happen to get a close up of the hood louvers? I believe they are cut...this is where I got my idea to cut my louvers!

Re: anyone wanna see earnhardt's IROC?
Those wheels are trivial unless you are willing to cut the front and rear wheel wells like this car is. No wheel lip at all and the opening is HUGE! I guess these are widebody quaters?
Very cool - thank you for sharing. I have wanted to take a look at one of the originals for a while. Has anyone made a replica yet?

Re: anyone wanna see earnhardt's IROC?
The louvers are not really louvers, just cuts in the hood. The car does actually have a "widebody"

Re: anyone wanna see earnhardt's IROC?
I worked for him from 1990 until his passing in 2001. He had an IROC race car in his personal collection which was the very first third gen IROC test car, chassis number 84-12. I assume the car is still there somewhere.
It was unusual in that it has a production roof skin, whereas the regular race cars used a fiberglass one. They were widened about 3-4" on the quaters and fenders. The hood louvers were really cool because you could see the engine through them. It still had a Traco race motor and the correct wheels/tires on it. The car at RCR is a perfect bookend to 84-12 in that it is one of the last IROC Camaro race cars that survived. They reskinned them into Dodges (yikes!) for the following season.
What's really neat is the fact that he had a matching street car to go with it. It was a loaded red TPI/J65 with a black interior. The last time I saw it, it had 12,000 miles on it and was completely original, except for the tires which we replaced with new gatorbacks in 2000. He always commented on how good it drove, which is a testimony to the car itself. I assume it's still there somewhere as well.
There were a couple of times when we put the race car and the street car together for displays and special events. People loved them!

Re: anyone wanna see earnhardt's IROC?
Thanks for sharing these pictures. I have lost a little interest in NASCAR lately but these pictures kinda bring me back to a little bit of my childhood. given I wasn't and Earnhardt fan but I sure did respect the man and if he was in a position to win and my driver was not I was pulling for Dale Sr. He paid the ultimate price but because of him NASCAR is safer now than it ever was and more guys are walking away with maybe a bruise when before it may have been broken bones IE: Juan Montoya in Daytona and smahing into a Jet Dryer. It really is a tribute to the work NASCAR did to keep these guys safe, it's just a shame that someone like Dale Sr. had to pay the price for NASCAR to do something about it

Awesome to see that. Still need to make that trip to NC one day. I recently sold my collection of Earnhardt items as I have pretty much lost interest in the past few years. Started watching it some this year again now that is group racing again!

Thanks for sharing! It occurs to me that NASCAR needs to bring the IROC Series back. Maybe it will spark some interest. By the way I see you have an 85. I owned an 85 IROC back in 1988. Man that thing was fast. Could hang with most stock vettes right up to the 150 mph mark back in the day. It had 20 thousand some odd miles on it when I bought it and slick rear tires, (didn't they all?) The couple that bought it had to sell it because HE lost his license due to exhibition of speed! I still miss it. Would love to see pictures of yours.
Anyway, I bought an 88 IROC-Z with 60 thousand miles on it a few years ago from an old kid who kept it garaged and took it to car shows. It is now under the knife. Can't leave anything alone!

You mean you watched the plate races. There's a whole not more to NASCAR than the plate tracks.

Hey guys--I spoke to Kerry, Dale's oldest son last night. The street car is still there at DEI in a warehouse. It hasn't been driven since he passed away.

i feel like kerry got a bad deal, hes not a big nascar star you know, i know he tests cars for dei and is trying to train jeffrey but hes got to have talent he could have been a great driver, money, fans, wins, championships, so could kelly for that matter but thats another story

Who produced the body panels for those cars? This one actually looks like it has a separate bumper, lip, hood, etc. rather than a single piece front end like many others I've seen.
