Yea, I got issues. Haha. I plan to have the 12 bolt in by late Sunday. I'm hoping to feel a big difference going from 2.77's to 3.73's.

Ever think about an undercoating, like a bedliner type material for the underbody?

very nice! stupid question but was the undercoating already removed before you did this? and how long did it take you? and is there anything you should be careful to not spray or scrub on? I bought one of those big bottles of oomph from k-mart for like 2bucks originally 8 or so hoping to clean up the underside some time. only thing is i gotta get the car moveable first!

I've done the 2.77 to 3.27 then to 3.42's on bolt on L98 and its been a big difference each step. 2.77's to 3.73's will be reallly really fun Hope to change my 99 TA from 2.73 to 3.73.

I don't know what was under your car, but I had the Rusty Jones beeswax undercoating on mine. Simple Green worked great at dissolving it, but it would have required a lot of work to get everything. I found Gunk Gel engine degreaser, sprayed the undercarriage, let it soak and hit it with a pressure washer. Here's my results.

I forgot to mention that the right side was done manually with a rag and mineral spirits and took all day. I got a much better clean with the Gunk. I did have to use some Simple Green and a clean rag to wipe any residue left after the Gunk cleaning and this was the result.

I'm having a heck of a time removing that grime on them. The shocks are the only suspension pieces left that are stock. They work fine, but I'll most likely buy new ones. I doubt I'll undercoat it. I really like the way it looks now.


I don't believe so. I'd guess it just didn't come out of the factory with any undercoating. It was just dirty. Some parts required more scrubbing than others. But before I even started, it was pretty darn clean under there to start with. It just wasn't shinny or as bright as it is now. It took about 4 hours. I used a 50/50 mix of simple green and water. There was really nothing to watch out for when doing it. It's pretty much all hard lines and stuff under there.


That's good to hear guys! My cars been screaming for gears ever since the H/C/I swap. Not to mention it was a coin flip as of late if the POSI was going to work on the 9 bolt. I did buy these though for the new 12 bolt:


That looks excellent! I don't know if it didn't come with undercoating, or if it was removed at one point. But when I got under there, it was just dirty.

But it is literally the strongest, longest lasting wax I have ever used. My buddies and I put a coat on our cars before winter. And it will last 6-7 months through a cold, wet, salty Buffalo winter. My car is a weekend warrior that doesn't even see rain. I'm confident putting a layer of it under the car now while it's clean will last quite a while.

Looks pretty sweet man, looks like a new stock underbody iroc....

I Just spent 270$ on POR15 products (paint suit, brushes, 2 quarts POR15, marine clean, metal ready, gloves, etc.) and im going to do this cleaning first, and then do a full underbody undercoat with POR15 semi-gloss black.

Looking good. Simple Green is excellent stuff, especially when combined with a couple well-chosen brushes. I use it to clean the rear 'bowls' of my aluminum rims a couple times a year. To me an aluminum rim isn't really 'clean' unless the non-face section is too. (Maybe you're not the only one with 'issues' )

My Camaro was Ziebarted by the original owner. I like the protection, but there's something really cool about being able to preserve and see a view like the above. To me it's a part of 3gen history. Maybe it'd be worth shooting it with clearcoat?

On my Camaro, I do re-apply rubberized undercoating in high-wear places like wheelhouses, as needed. Seems like a good low-budget solution, compared to more 'robust' stuff like Por15.

Did either of those immaculate chassis have undercoating on them?
I've laquer thinnered my to death and still have about a paints thickness of the black crap covering the factory paint.

Lol sure do. But it's not a daily driver. I wouldn't consider the car as having low miles anymore. I got 75,200 miles on it currently.

What is the most effective product to use to remove undercoating?
Laquer thinner evaporates too quickly. Varsol or paint thinner isn't aggresive enough.
I'd like to remove the undercoating but leave the factory gray e-coat.
From the picture you can see that's it's in excellent condition.

I used a putty knife to remove the majority of the gunk under my car, then "purple power" to clean up what was left, worked for me. Once you get the 'thick' stuff off, it comes off easily enough

wowwwwwwwwwww you guys are lucky!!! lol if only my underbody was that pretty. wow. ive got a weekend coming up at the body shop with a grinder and por 15. not looking forward to it but must do it before the car comes off the road in about 6 weeks. ill take pics of how it goes.
