hey guys here is a new little project im working on, its a new gauge cluster for my autometer gauges, its not finished yet, I still need to finish fiber glassing it, cut holes & paint it, then install the gauges, the gauges are tilted upwards so i can see them better, they are also out a lot father than the originals as you can see in the pics, i wanted something different so thats why im making my own, i will post more pics as i go,hope you like!

I like it! What is the surround gonna look like, painted black or.....? Gonna have a way for dash (SES & such) lights to show?

yes i used some bondo, but the main part is fleece stretched over the shape, and then fiberglass resin brushed over it and wait for it to harden. any more info i can give let me know, thanks for the comments.

Re: custom gauge project!

well guys im finally started my wiring harness! i don't have much time to do anything with work on the go.what do you guys think of the way i have this hooked up? I'm thinking that this way i can dim the lights from my head light switch, if this works out i wont have to cut my harness on the car,all the grounds, ignition and some senders are already there, the one on the right will power the volts, clock and air fuel, the one on the left will get ran to the pillar pod powering the oil pressure, temp and water temp, gas spedo and tach will finish up the rest of this set up,if you have any info please let me know, i'm not sure if this will work so any info will help. custom gauge project!-dscn1974.jpg

Re: custom gauge project!

OK guys here are another few pics, I'm almost finished you can see what I'm doing here, the way i have the wires hooked up works really good, its a pretty simple set up, i had them all lighted up just to see if it worked, and it worked fine, i still don't have a motor in the car so i cant see if all the senders work, but i think it will be fine! I still have to hook up the other 3 gauges ill be putting them under the heater vents, you can see where i have the wires ran out, would like to know what you think, good or bad, hope you like!!

For the wiring I would use a quick disconnect on them like this one. It is what I used on my custom guage cluster and makes life extremely easy when you need to remove them from the car.

Re: custom gauge project!

I have the same gauges and wanted to run the same setup you made. Same with the gauges under the vents. I don't like the pillar mounted gauges so wanted something different, you beat me to it

Any finished pics with them under the vents?

Re: custom gauge project!

hey guys my gauge project is almost finished, but I hit a wall, can someone tell me if I need to hook up only two wires to my volt gauge, or can I use the red/sender-white/ignition-black/ground from my orignal cluster? autometer instructions say its a two wire hook up, can someone confirm this for me, here are a few pics, thanks

Re: custom gauge project!

The voltage meter requires 2 wires. One is ground and the other is a 12v switched ignition wire. If you can use the that supplied a signal to the OEM gauge then use it. If not then find you need to run a wire from the gauge to the fuse panel that only gets 12v when the key is turned to the run position. Look in your fuse panel and locate a spare terminal that says IGN. That will be the place to tap into for the "feed" wire for the gauge. Use a test light to verify that the location on the fuse block is only hot when the key is in run. If the test light lights up with the key in the OFF position then that is a constant power terminal. Do NOT use those spots.
Now it's been a while since I played with these gauges but the last time I checked, Auto Meter had a seperated white and black wire going to the light bulb socket. You can either splice the white (hot) wire into the same wire you are using to feed the gauge or you can tap into one of the gauge cluster wires that does to the headlight switch. The later option will turn the gauge light on when you turn your headlights on.
