listen im not saying that the work is not good cause it is, but i do that stuff all the time with little or no filler! and yes shaping metal is an art and thats what i like about it,and thers not much shaping metal on that car,i love the car,but its not hard work, also I'm not being negative, its just points of interest.

Excellent build so far and they're not even half way done. All the other rides they've done are pretty impressive also. Those rears look about 14" wide. Later.

T-tops aren't all they're made out to be, sure it's nice for a sunny day, but I've heard about a couple guys completely shattering the tops when they launched a little too hard at the track.
I guess it all comes down to personal opinions, but hardtops are nice.

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
I'm not here to knock anything. T-tops, gutting the sheetmetal inside, etc. But I give credit where its due. This is awesome the amount of skill needed to pull something like this off is crazy. I think its cool that a big name shop is taking the time for a third gen. We should if anything acknowledge the skill and imagination that is involved in something like this. Granted some of us here knock the ideas in this build, but we all haven't seen the finished product. I myself will keep an eye on this one. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Makes me want to cut that big "hump" if you'd call it that, out of the back. I'll turn my Third Gen into a grocery getter with more cargo space than a Tahoe!

Trailer queen my ***.......more than one of Troys creations have been on cross country road trips or track thrashings.
Its refreshing to see something radical done to any vehicle.....especially a third gen. Can"t wait to see the finished product.

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
I realize it the flares were just a silver painted cardboard mockup , but I hope their a bit more tastefully done than that . The rocker extensions are amazing , it goes really well with the 3 gen body style and might theee only version other than stock I just might like when all is said n done . With that speaking , the metal work on that car is phenomenal . Hope it turns out as good as the potential that lurks .

Look at pics 186 through 196. The ground effects get changed, apparently as new ideas come. Like the 2010 tail lights. It was originally built for stock lights, or at least the housings, then redesigned to fit the 2010 Camaro tail lights.

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
I wonder where we would be if our great hotrodding ancestors worried that stripping the fenders from a model T and replacing it's motor and entire drivetrain would make it "not a real model T any more"?
Is there something sacred about an F bodies floorpan? The way I see it it's just like every other production car chassis... to heavy and all to weak.
This just goes to show that the hotrod community has decayed into a bunch of overly conservative.

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
Ooook , I retract . Still phenomenal craftsmenship , but it just got real ugly with the odd creases and 5th gen inspired rear end . They shoulda left it at the wheel flares and ground fx , then it coulda looked like a trans am race series inspired street car .

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
I would have done the flares different also, with the tallent these people have I would have added the width at the shoulder line.
Giving the car a more pronounced "coke bottle" look, especialy from above.
Combined with a bit of stretching of the panels them selves and slightly more agressive lips I think it would have made a very nice look. Onr thing I notice when I pull into the driveway and see my T/A is that it seems taller and narrower than I think it should be.

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
As usual from Troy, awsome work and excellent craftsmanship... The majority of customizers could really give a rip what others consider "acceptable mods" or styling... There work is done for the customer or for themselves and are meant to have many, many unique features that will separate them from the crowd....
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I've yet to see a car that is too "sacred" to be cut up and modified to suit the owner and or builders desire!!! Building a car the way you want to do it is still the biggest reason a lot of people got into Hot Rods and Muscle Cars at all....

Looks like the build is going for the road race look.
Nice to see Troy, a builder with such a high profile and reputation, is building a 3rd gen.
Its about time our cars got some respect. And...our bodies are still metal...unlike the 4th gens

It looks like when a company makes a toy, or an artist draws a car for a cartoon, and they don't want to pay the royalties... They mess up a couple key details and act like it's an original design. It demonstrates how these cars are really close to the edge of the goofy canyon, and if the cosmetic modifications aren't kept tasteful the entire car goes over the edge.

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
Are you saying it resembles some drawing you've seen?
It is a customers car, not the shops. So the customer may have been the original artist, be the one who "copied it"....Whatever the case is. Rad Rides by Troy is not the one "copying" anything 100%.
Who here HASN'T copied an idea (or 2 or 3) from others? Nobody! As much as we'd like to say "My car is 100% my original idea.", that is EXTREMELY unlikely. Be it wheel choice, color choice, or whatever...We were all influenced by something we saw on another car.

Very cool ride. I like the rear spoiler and how it looks like it's going to be setup to move as the car runs at higher speeds. I also like the intergration of the new Camaro tail lights. The car is going to be really nice when it's done. Really nice.

Wow, as always the boys are doing some really first rate work!!!!! As with any car, doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks should or shouldn't be done in the way of styling, the guy with the checkbook has the final say!!!!!! I've built many cars that I've had issues with what the customer wanted done, but if you are in the business of working on other people's car you soon learn to build the way the customer wants it built.... Just like doing my own in my garage, don't really care what anybody thinks of the project----it's mine!!!!! IMO, the 3rd Gens were far from perfect when they were brand new, lots of areas where improvements can be made

So far I don't like it. They messed with the straight lines of the thirdgen. If I wanted to buy a car like the I would have bought a Delorean.
I don't know just not my style I guess. Too each his own
I am interested to see the final out come though. My opinion may change who knows? :P

I do believe its all about personal taste but I wonder why people always compare
"Bad" looking things in general to DeLoreans.
I mean come on... It does not even look like one...Take it from a owner.

^^ That's exactly what i was going to say. No way through my eyes does that look like a Delorean! Anyways I personally really like the way the exterior of the car is coming out with the exception of the 5th gen looking tail lights, but I also wouldn't keep the stock ones. Because of the extensive modification they have done to the rest of the car, it just wouldn't look right imo.

IIRC, it was that the Tojan was the Firebird & the Carallo was the Camaro, both with the wider fenders & new nose. Or maybe the other way around?
But I wouldn't really say either of those look much like this one. They just "share" the idea of flared rear fenders.

I think it looks awesome. I just saw it on the cover of Hotrod and bought the magazine, only to find out there is no real mention of it other than on the cover. So I looked it up on the Rad Rides by Troy site and then looked it up on here. I can't wait to see it finished. Sorta wonder why they didn't go the LSX TT route?

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
Come on guys seriously? People are bashing this, Ok so its not everyone's cup of tea but common, I've seen some pretty hideous third gens out there, and this is not one of them. I would rather see 110 camaros chopped cut and CLEAN then 1 pile of duct taped junk driven buy some Joe dirt wanna be. Yes the change is drastic and yes it borrows some ideas from newer cars and maybe even some imports. But come on, it's being made for someone that loves our cars, and is investing a lot of money into the car the HE/SHE wants. Whatever your tastes this car will most likely be nicer then 99.9999% of any 82-92 camaro, even if nice is based solely on being clean. I bet noone beat your ***** when you slapped z28 emblems and a dented dynomax exhaust on your lime green 2.8.
If you don't have anything nice to say, follow your grandmothers instructions...and don't say anything at all

Edit:
Even the all of the glass isn't thirdgen (no back hatch)
if the owner is soo thirdgen crazy as you put it, why does every aspect of the car have a major modification??

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
OK so your saying that everything has a minor mod...ok so you slap a ram air hood on maybe an lt1 swap, some fender vents from a second gen maybe some new wheels, and shave the door handles... ooops you still have stock quarter panels...so this guy didn't use off the shelf parts, really is there a difference?
i guess your a traitor if ya slap a ford nine between the rear wheels to huh

Re: rad rods by troy is building a thirdgen
Guess I don't see anything wrong with modding every panel on the car!!!! I've read so much whining on here about this or that part doesn't bolt on absolutely perfectly--then when someone gets into customizing a car everyone has to bash it!!!!
As far as opinions on how the car looks, the only opinion that counts is the owner's!!!!! Having built a number of one off customs, it's fun to go to a show and just stand there and listen to what others say about it....and even more fun to see what they drive!!!! Customizing is just another form of artful expression, if you don't like it, fine. But what an artist or a customizer does is create something that he himself or in this case the PAYING customer wants!!! If you don't like it, who cares? If you think you can build something better, have at it! And if you think you can build a car that everybody likes, you're a dreamer!!!!
Finally, I would hazard a guess that none of the bashers ever have or ever will win as many awards or make the amount of money that Troy does with his cars.... Perhaps a lot of the bashing is little more then jealousy with a cheap disguise????
As far as opinions on how the car looks, the only opinion that counts is the owner's!!!!!
