Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
I've been looking a spoilers for thirdgen firebirds and I always liked the 3 piece design from the second gens. The closest thing the firebird got was the '88 SAP spoiler, but was a one piece that actually looks like the 60's firebird spoiler. Then recently I saw some pics of the 4th gen 421 SD trans am made by the GM Performance division. They fabricated a sweet 3 piece design just like the second gen's so I was thinking why not one for the thirdgens. If I could come up with a way to make one, I would try...but don't have a lot of time. I read 2nd gens do not fit because the endcaps are too long, and the middle spoiler piece is too short. I don't think it would be hard to fabricate some pieces up from the original designs. Anyway, I did some photoshopping to see what a thirdgen would look like with a secondgen style spoiler. I think the results look sweet. I really wish we could get something like this made.
(ps. not my car, found it on the internet)

At first glance it looks a lot like a 2nd gen. I think the idea would be cool, it sure looks good in a photochop.

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
there are rare Smokey and the Bandit Edition 3rd gens around. They are super rare, but they came with honey-comb style rims, a shaker hood (nonfunctional), wheel flares and a ducktail spoiler unfortunately the ducktail spoiler doesn't look quite as nice as that 'chop. Look for it around here, I've seen it before...

If the camaro and firebird/TA/ hatch is the same, couldn't you adapt a Hawks 5" or stock IROC 3 piece spoiler and fit it to your bird? I think only the 2 side 2 pieces would need modifications.
SOMEONE get this done for the BIRD's

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
It wouldn't look right, from the side.
The Camaros have a wrap around tail light, Firebirds don't. So on the sides, you'd have it sticking forward on the quarter panel, then a blank space behind it. 2nd gens got away with it, because they had wrap around tail lights like Camaros.
You could grab one off a Camaro to see, but the Firebirds are a bit wider, so even a 3rd gen Camaro one, wouldn't fit 100%.

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
There is no chance an OEM 2nd gen spoiler would fit. The center section is way too narrow and the ends are made to fit a car that is way more rounded than ours. If you hacked it up and modified it there wouldn't be anything left of the original one.

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
yes I know this thread is old, hopefully no one will mind. When my semester ends in 1 month I am considering trying to make a 2nd gen style spoiler and am looking for input. I am planning on trying to model it on the Z20 special appearance package. But for the third gens, do you think it would look better to have the side flairs continue down and around ( as on the 2nd gens)? Or does the Z20 package better follow the lines of the car? I lean towards the one piece, as the quarters on the 3rd gens are more vertical, and I think the side flares might be too extreme. Though the photoshop at the top of the page has me thinking...

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
Yes, please make this!! I've been wanting something like this for a long time. I've been trying to get someone to make something like this, but it seems every time someone thinks about doing it, it never happens. I really like the look of the 3 piece, and if it could be fabricated I think it would look sweet. the Z20 spoiler looks more like a 1st gen spoiler...it's still nice looking, but I think a 3 piece would be the way to go. Anyway, whatever you decide to do I would be very interested in getting one from you. Hopefully this wont fall through the cracks like so many others....

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
in 1988 Pontiac did a special appearance package that had a one piece duct-tail spoiler
you could probably take a camaro hatch and just modify the sides of the wing to look like that. maybe just use the tops of the side pieces. it depends on whether or not you want the side flares. personaly i think it wouldn't look rite with the side pieces.

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
I have been thinking about this for awhile now. I'm thinking about starting with a camaro 3 piece and almost hanging it off the back of the quarters on my trans am. Then I can tie it all in so it doesn't look "off". We will see what happens when it stops raining and I can pull out the fiberglass

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
The photoshop in the OP and the picture 87bluebird posted looks good. I think someone should tackle this either by making a custom one from fiberglass or by modifying an original one. And then post their progress.
Eventually, I'll be making my own version of the second gen camaro spoiler because the hawks version just doesn't appeal to me.

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
That white firebird with the wheel flares, spoiler, shaker...I think it looks pretty bad ***!! That is pretty much how I had envisioned how I want my TA to look. I really like the spoiler...the three piece design is cool, even if it's second gen. I still don't know why there isn't an aftermarket one, why HAWKS makes a 5" camaro spoiler but not a firebird version is beyond me. I like the Z20 spoiler, but it looks more 1st gen in my opinion. I like that it's a factory piece...but ultimately I think the three piece is more retro. I like the wheel flares, but I think the Z20 version flows better, since they are factory.
I love the shaker too, pretty sweet.

Re: Firebird 3 piece spoiler...why doesn't anyone make this?
Making that thirdgen ducktail spoiler actually wouldn't be too hard... especially with fiberglass. I have an idea of how to do it... Might need a second gen spoiler and a third gen spoiler and then some quality time with some sand paper and like magic you have the spoiler. Or that white had a very well done spoiler.

This spoiler is now offered by classic industries in their 82--02 firebird trans am catalog page 224 it's hard to find because it's listed under side spoilers because of the 2nd gen fender flares
