Thirdgens with black hoods?!
I have a 92 camaro that is teal and I am going to get my car painted when I get a cowl induction hood. I was going to paint the car the same teal, but I was thinking about getting the hood painted black, but Im not really sure if this will look good. Does anyone have any non black cars with a black hood? If so please post some pics, so I can get an idea of how it'll look

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
i really wouldn't go with a black hood on a colored car, personally i think that it looks to "Honda'ish" rice grinders have carbon fiber hoods because they don't have enough ***** to "carry the weight" this is pure american muscle that you are talking about here... LOL it can handle the weight of a steel hood.
that's just the way that I see it - black = carbon fiber = rice grinder = weak! go with the same color.... PLEASE!

Nice IA. IA, do you have a small flat lip on the front of that hood? It looks like my daytona hood which had a half inch-3/4" lip in the front. Im just going to bolt the hood on then when I can get the car painted I will have it sanded down and aligned correctly.

My uncle told me one time that a lot of the old muscle cars that you see with black hoods painted them matte black to reduce the glare. My vote is go solid color or do full length stripes, but its your car.

I am with Abubaca... It looks like you did not want to paint the hood the right color, or you changed the hood from another car, and decided not to paint it.
While you are at it, paint one fender yellow, the other green one door red the other blue. and the hatch purple, keep the rest of the car teal and drive around with a rainbow wig.

Well personally I wouldn't do it. Around here every import has done that to there cars. Heck I almost don't want to put hood pins in because there so overly used around here by any want-to-be street racer and that sucks cause that use to be big on muscle cars back in the day.

I second what "irockid86" said. If you have a paint job that galres it helps a **** load. Hot Rodders and Muscle guys have had black hoods way before ricers were even thought of.

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
Funny how people say black hoods are "r i c e", yet some of the late 60s Mopars came STOCK with flat black hoods, as irockid86 already mentioned.
R i c e didn't even exist in the 60s. So who copied who?

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
I wouldn't go with a black hood... unless it was real carbon fiber because then it actually does something for you. And yes the 60s mopars came with black hoods but this isn't the 60s and all the little rice cakes now have them...really its personal taste though. ( even with carbon fiber I would paint it personally)

whoever said it looks rice ish is rediculous. the original americam muscle had flat black hoods you know? the Hemi Cuda? Dodge Challeneger (not 2008 Challenger, The 70's). I think flat blak hoods look good. Kind of a retro muscle car

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
Black hoods on Mopars weren't the only black on the cars. They had a specific color, plus matte black parts and accents. Totally different.
...and if "some" had hoods only painted black, then it still looks like a$$. -regardless of who started the trend.
I imagine most people thought it looked stupid, so muscle cars stopped doing it. Then in traditional "import" fashion, they looked around to see what could be done "appearance wise" without actually making performance mods, and BANG...-Stickers, and primer/black are now back in fashion.

back in the 60's some of the fastest cars came from the factory with the front in gel coat anyway. but usually ended up in primer, because it was cheaper. and on a sidenote you can airbrush "rust", saw it on a restored race car once.

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
I always thought it would be cool to literally shoot up my doors, quarter panels and fenders and such...to get that bullet hole look (not with them on the car for obvious reasons, Im not that dumb). Then take it to a shop and have them airbrush the rest around the holes and car. So at a car show they think ahh dumb bullet holes again, wait...WTF, those are real! Haha, you think I'd win BEST REALISTIC PAINT JOB?

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
yeah Abubaca your right, they did have more accents and stuff and it really depends on the person, not everybody is going to like the black hood. i mean not everybody likes ttops, its really about what YOU like. I think to pull off the whole black hood thing, you would need to paint the tops of the fenders (before it hits the crease that goes down) and paint the back hatch lid the same black including the spoiler. and i think the actual car color would matter to. i dont think red with black hood would look good. i think purple with black hood looks good, even a dark blue or even a white. idk just my opinions. please dont hate if you dont agree with me!!

...but a fully painted car, with just a black hood looks unfinished. You may like it, and that's totally cool, but it doesn't change the fact that it looks unfinished.
...but yes, ultimately it's an opinion.

I like flat black hoods on cars that aren't all flat. But only on 'birds for some reason, and only if its a cowl or ram-air hood... I'm weird, lol.

Abubaca, yes i as well think a car looks unfinished with just the hood painted black. even though im mismatched as hell, i still think it looks like crap. only reason mines unmatched is cause i aint painted it red yet. be painting it within a month or two.
so did those mopars use a matte black, a low gloss black, a semi-gloss black, etc
what color do they usually use?

It's not painted, just the factory gel coat, which peeled off from weather and is now just flat black. You get the idea.

Muscle car recently did a Cuda...Rick Bacon painted the hood with kitchen drawer liner to create a carbon fiber look. It turned out really awesome....

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
I would do it/leave it if it was in a racing situation and it was a pin on hood. Otherwise, I would not leave it black unless I am really broke. Which in that case I would not have bought the hood until I had the hood cost and paint cost saved up or If it was just a deal you could not pass up.

Yeah it did didn't it, I really respect rick bacon, as well as kevin tetz (although that's aside from the point), but sometimes I don't know what they're thinking, I don't know if you saw the espisode were rick made his own exhaust tips for the cuda, and his finish was to scuff up the stainless steel with like 200 grit... and he called it "one-off" I bet they were too becuase who would be stupid enough to make something look so awful lol.

Re: Thirdgens with black hoods?!
I did mine flat black because I couldnt afford to paint it to match the car. I also saw it as a bit of an homage to old school muscle cars at the same time.
When I paint the whole car I'll strp it back down and paint it to match, but if I just bought the paint and painted it as is, it wouldnt match my aging factory paint anyway. So I figured if it wasn't going to match, just paint it black.
I originally used to agree with all the guys saying it doesnt look good, but it's definitely grown on me ever since I put it on the car. I've had a lot of people tell me to just leave it black when I do repaint the car... go figure.
I do resent the "laziness" comments. I probably put about 50 hours into that hood. (Not the paint obviously) It's a practicality thing more than a laziness thing.
And this may not make much sense, but I do think the black works a little better with some colors than others. I think with bright colors it would work a lot better than dark ones. White, yellow, bright red, orange, lime green, etc, but Im not sure. It just sort of seems that way.

Champion Hoods
It's mw66nova's old hood. I get the impression he's really unhappy with the new one (same hood, just the lift off version) though.
