84 black paint
Does anyone know of a good wax or polish to use on the original black paint on an 84? I've tried several products, but most of them leave swirls and marks. The paint is laquer, according to the cowl tag. Tx

Re: 84 black paint
Rubbing Compound -> Finishing Compound (For both I suggest Turtle wax, it's cheap, and good with highspeed buffer) and ofcourse, -> 3M Swirl remover. It works great, turns crappy paint into good paint.

If you're applying waxes and getting swirl marks, it is not the wax. It is the applicator/towels you are using. If you only have light swirls on the car, do not use rubbing compound!

Re: 84 black paint
pics will be alot helpful! How bad is the marring/swirls? Turtle wax compound is awful. Anything TW is terrible. Get pics up like sun light shots/ under halogen lights so we can see. I assume its probably not in great shape due to age/and improper washin/detailing techniques.

For a black car i like meguires 9 swirl remover 2.0 with a soft foam pad on the buffer. After the car is swirl and scratch free. Micro fiber towels to finish.

Re: 84 black paint
There are pics in my vbgarage. The car has only 7400 miles on it; the paint is in extremely great shape; it's just that I'm not happy with how it turns out when I wax it. Over the weekend, I washed it and just hit it with Meguiars qwik detailer. It seems to be the only thing that doesn't leave a haze or swirl marks.

I'd bet you are either applying too much product, or again, are using towels/applicators that are causing your swirl marks. What exactly do you use when applying the wax and removing it?

On my 2000 NHRA Edition Formula, which is black, I like the Wax Shop Super Glaze. It's the only thing I will use on a dark car.

Re: 84 black paint
Buy MF towels from Pakshak, Autogeek.. Those are the best MF you can get, they are from Korea, not like the ones you get from Walmart. Swirl Marks come from people washing it improperly, wiping/dusting it... Im such a fussy person and see swirls on brand new cars in the showroom From dealers using brooms and dirty old rags and dusting it... On a 20 yr old black car you will expect swirls in it (even low mile cars).. Most people do not have good understandings on how to detail a car properly. Those pics still dont do justice, on how bad swirls the swirls are... You need the sun hitting directly on the paint, or have it under strong lights.. However, the paint looks very wet from far away.. We need to see those actual swirls your talking about. Theres many good companies like Optimum, Poorboys, Menzerna, Pinnacle Xmt and others that will take out most swirl marks/paint defects with a PC. Personally i love Menzerna IP with a white polishing pad and hit it with Menzerna Final Polish II (cant afford the PO106ff right now) These are abrasive polishes that will take out the swirls, not like many products that these car stores have that claim they get rid of swirls ( these are fillers that only hide the defects) I do a search on www.autopia.org. Great place to look thru. I was going through the same problems with my black 91 Z28 with 16k org miles.. By the way your car is really clean, awesome example of what a thirdgen should look like
Also i like to apply my sealants and waxes by PC (not hand) If you apply your LSP by hand, make sure you do it side by side, up and down motions... Do not do it in circle motions. This will most likely bring the swirls back in and makes things worst and harder for you.
Meguiars #9 is a okay product. Although it dust and doesn't have a good cut to it..
