Iroc Turbo Hood??

Hey guys....well I'm saving up for a new hood...but I'm not too sure I want the SS hood due to functional problems I've been hearing about on the boards....Honestly, I think the IROC Turbo Hood looks badass

http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...il?v=1&pid=151

Is this hood functional? And what problems would I run into putting it on, etc....I'm just kind of suspicious, seeing as I don't really see anyone with that hood. Thanks!!!

When you say functional, what "function" are you looking for it to perform?

It you want to hook up a cold air intake? Just looking to get cooler air into the engine bay?

flynlow,

cooler air..I'm not too familiar with the SS but I hear you have to hack some stuff to get that effect. I have to wait for the damn winter to end before I buy anything. what do you think? btw, did you ever catch those ****in cQcksuckers that messed w/ your car?

That picture looks red neck! lol C'mon, that pic was from the 80s ,right? I have it and have had it for 4 yrs. It comes with plates that you can use to block the sides or you can leave them off for fresh air to enter the engine bay. The engine will get really dirty though since it is so open! I put mine on. Fitment is not all too bad. Like any aftermarket fiberglass piece, fitment is not going to be perfect, but it fit well for me. I like mine b/c A: no one around here has them, B: It goes so well with my color, its more subtle than anything. IMO they look bad on cars that are not done tastefully, but that is just my opinion, and of course, you know what they say about those... lol Its really up to you but sooner or later, everyone will have SS hoods and they already have cowl hoods. Thats what you get with an aftermarket like ours for these cars, not too much selection! good luck

i like the hood looks on the original side with alot of pop...i am just not to sure of glass hoods how hard is it to prep and paint. and fit problems seem quite common with them. all fiberglass in general. my curent hood has headlight rot so it is time for a replacement. but i do like this style and everyone has an ss hood.

i would like to see some picture of people that have them and the side opening details. i would keep mine closed as i have a tpi car.

How is that hood subtle, its like a toned down version of the hood from corvette summer. Imo I've never seen a car with one that was done tastefully, cause the hood ruined the whole car. And thirdly Ive seen alot more of those than SS hoods because theyve been available for so long.

Just another opinion to add to the pile huh?!?! lol Anyway, i'll get a pic of my "dirty" car tommorrow, email it to you, and you can post it here since i am unable to do so. I feel it has been done tastefully, but thats me. Besides, you cut out the part of my statement that makes sense, the part about the color! I think mine looks subtle b/c of the color, the hood does not stick out like say on a red car. That is what i meant, but its ok if you twist my statement around. I'll live! That is my opinon. Just like how i think SS hoods are getting more common. Take a look around this site. I bet there are more SS hoods on active members than Turbo hoods. And my statement still holds true about cars around MY area not having the hood. But i must admit, i have yet to see an SS hood on a thirdgen in person! later

A cowl induction hood would look MUCH, MUCH sleeker in my opinion. If you want a similar style, go cowl induction. Otherwise the SS hood is always a crowd pleaser I suppose.

Ihave had that hood for several years and get nothing but complements. Everything is personal preference. Mine is from ASCD and fit perfect. No problems with painting either. It does get your engine dirty if you leave the scoop holes open but since I detail cars and wash mine at least 2-3 times a week that is not a problem. I say do what makes you happy.

This shoud come to no surprise to anyone but i don't like the hood............Think about the overall idea you want with your car......

If you are going for the old school look, then a IROC turbo hood may look ok, a cowl would work well.....

A more modern look is the SS hood or Ram Air 2 hood

For instance take my car, It would horrible with a IROC turbo hood, but a car like 86 NiteRider can pull off the hood and make it look good....It's all relative....

No offense, but that hood is ghetto fabulous! If you didnt want to go with a SS or cowl hood, you could always go with a 1991-1992 Z-28 hood.

Camaro is a car i don;t consider red neck, p/u or station wagon well now lets talk *******.

i like the hood in all black looks very good.

I like the louvers.
I like the vents.

They look terrible together.

Kinda like having 2 wings on the same car. TOOOOO much. Looks like pep boys.

Not trying to flame, just my opinion. On that note, I don't like most of the glass hoods out nowadays either. A good cowl hood is plain and simple. Less CAN be more.

the turbo hood would look some better with the 91-92 blisters instead of the iroc vents. Just my opinion. I personally like the cowl and ss hood better.

Would be interesting in seeing the turbo with the blister though.

thanks for the compliment. anyway, im thinking of just going with a 2 inch cowl, or a 91-92 Z hood(only downfall is i dont think my hood will close with this one) I dont like the SS hood at all on our cars, it just doesnt follow the lines IMO...plz no one take offense to that

Heres my question whats wrong with it looking *******? Im from NC and I've seen alot worse here haha. For example the 80's mustang guys knock out their front headlights and rig oil bottles for cold air induction. I personally like the hood, a buddy of mine has it here is his site on car domain http://www.cardomain.com/id/bigtony_89iroc and I think it looks nice with this car. Its just what you like, bunch of yankees better shut up sayin *******....

haha this is what you get when you ask peoples opinions on a certain product. everyone is going to have their seperate opinions about a look. you were asking for something that is functional, yes that hood is functional because after all it is a cowl induction hood. i do understand the fact that it could let in more dirt on the side holes but you can block them up or, put a screen behind it with something to filter out that dirt.

the iroc hood looks as close to a stock hood as you can get. there are different styles though that you have to look at. some have louvers, some do not....some of those hoods come to more of a point in the front then others, as you could see with some of them. its all a matter of your own taste

personally for my vote, im in the market for that hood. i think it looks different and i like the louvers. the SS hood is on like 1 out of every 2 3rd gens in my town, and a regular cowl is on most of the others.

thats all off the topic...for your questions, yes its funtional, yes you could run into a fitting problem, but everyone tipically does with a different hood
