Craving for a Targa - Ideas on how? See Pics...

Just let me know what you think and how you think I could reinforce the frame to do so. How much reinforcement is needed?

Think sfcs are enough? should i reinforce the interior above the rockers with a roll cage into the front subframe?

What are all of your thoughts.

Thanks

Nic

i would think a good set of sfc's would be enough, but a roll cage wouldn't hurt either. i would say if you did both, you would have no problems at all.

looks better on the birds. the maro's have more of a "race car" look to them so to not have the middle bar seems odd imo.

o, and btw, for the birds. i didnt save the original pics, so if you know whos cars these are let me know.

i was quoted 2000 to do it, i think i can do it myself for about 700 with the sfcs and a custom cage installed. then i have plenty of ideas for the t-tops themselves.

Very nice photoshopping. As said I'm sure if you put in both a cage and SFC's it wouldn't be a problem at all.

A local guy here.. (Orlando, FL) has a LS1 Z28 with just that...

He did a custom targa top on it.

The only reinforcement he has is SFC's. As for the removable targa top, he custom molded one in carbon fiber. He said that he used 2 T-Tops and hand made the mold.

The kid has some serious skill.. He hand crafted his own carbon fiber hood and custom front end as well. The front end is a cross between a Z06 front clip and a Z28 clip.

Beautiful car.. The carbon fiber targa mated with the carbon fiber hood (both unpainted, which I am against 99.9999999% of the time..) makes the car look amazing.

I'll try and get some pics if he's out this weekend. He should be at the SLP Day.

Good thing you put a targa top on sonar's car since he won't be able to open his doors like that

Try a search over at camaroz28.com in the appearance section. I think his name is Whistler. There were plenty of pics of that car over there when he finished the project. Super-sweet ride by the way! Later!

Though it sounds cool, I would not want to lose the frame support that the T gives.

I'm thinking about getting a stripped down 84 Z with t's to attempt a targa conversion on. Mainly just for kicks but who knows I just might be able to resurect her from the junk yard

No WAY!! You were quoted only $2000 to do that?! What all did that include? I'd be willing to drive out to Omaha to get that done for only $2000. (just not right now, gotta start saving the $$$ now)

Lemme know what the deal is.

Thanks,
Jesse

Do you leave fiberglass hoods unpainted? No.

CF is known for its strength/lightweight.. Only the "false import enthusiasts" buy it for the look.

Are Mclarens unpainted CF?

No.

I like targa tops but GM can't even keep the t-tops from leaking. I can only imagine how bad a targa top would leak.

On my Corvette the targa top is an amazing pain in the *** to remove & reinstall. Instead of having claps like a convertable top or t-tops, it's held in place with 4 torx bolts. My guess is because it's the only way they could keep it from leaking.

So you have to unscew it, to take the top off. Not Fun.

Redraif and I are doing a targa conversion on her 82 TA...we'll post pics as soon as we have them. We're using SFCs and a rollbar.

BTW there were some early 3rd gen Camaros that were targas...not sure who did the conversions, but the "Simon&Simon" tv show had one.

A while back there was an Simon & Simon close up targa camaro for sale in Cali. IIRC they used the frames of the t's and also had two extra locking mechanisms in the center to hold that in place. The Camaro was in bad shape but I loved just looking at the pic's
Soooo sweet :hail:

around 2000 was a rough quote from detroit speed and machine... they do very high quality work. that was to reinforce the frame, cut the top and clean it up. he didnt know how much a new top would cost, that stuffi i said i would worry about.

i can do it cheaper on my own. but if you want to pay to have something done. pay the right people the right amount of cash. they are definately the right people....
