I will have to find the photos of the build up (will post as soon as I do).
1. I cut the t-top bar out of the car first with a cutting wheel.
2. Welded in two peices of metal to create covers where I cut.
3. Ordered the replacement weatherstriping, cut the weatherstriping before the bend, then used the pieces that I cut out to create the missing section of the weather striping. You'll need to use very strong glue to connect the peices of weather striping or else you will have leak city.
4. I created a removable center section out of the metal t-top piece. (The black thin metal piece that bolts on the the car). I fabricated a latch to keep this locked down. Wouldn't want fly away tops!
5. Presto Targa-T-tops!
The cool thing that I like about doing the mod is now I have three different top configurations.
1. I can use my old t-tops with the center section
2. I had a local shop create a full top out of black tinted lexan and attached a set of orginal t-top latches on it.
3. I am also having a local shop create a soft top. This top will be able to roll up and store alot easier than the other two tops.

Targa Top
One thing that I did fail to mention is that you need to do one of two things when converting you car like this. You will need to either install subframe connectors or an eight point roll bar to strengthen your car back up.
When you cut the t-top section out of your car you will create a flex point. Hence the reason for the subframe connectors/rollbar.
If you don't do this, when you jack up your car you will not be able to open the doors. Believe me I learned the hard way.

It's a custom 90 model Chevrolet truck. It also has all the new model stuff (motor - interior) and it's supercharged. It was a feature truck in Sport Truck magazine in December and will be a feature in June issue of Truckin'.

Sweet cars.
Now I know what my first mod I am going to do after the motor and subrframe connectors are installed, targa top.
Been wanting to do this mod since 2000.
The only thing custom on my car is the shaved antenna, everything else was just a bolt on.
Small list of some items,
95 Formula Rearend with Brakes
Hotchkis Subframe connectors
84 Trans Am Power Bulge Hood
84 Trans Am Fender Vents
91 Camaro Rocker panels and door molding
95 LT1 converted to LT4
OZ Racing 17x9.5 Monte Carlos
Autometer Triple Pod with Autometer A/F Gauge and Boost Gauge
CSI Digital Temp Gauge/Controller
96 Trans Am Leather Seats
97 Trans Am Center Console
96 Camaro Steering wheel
Eibach Sportline Lowering Springs
T56 6 speed tranny (taking my brothers as soon as I can get a 4L60E to put into his 96 T/A)
And I want to make a custom housing to use Ferarri Tail Lights,

I like the first ever custom mod I ever did to my motor. I really need to repolish my plenum, its gotten pretty dirty and oxidized.

The fender ducts that I have on my car is the fenders that came on a trans am. My car is a 87 Trans am GTA which didn't have the duct works, so I found some fenders from the same year on a regular trans Am. Hope that helps.

Tail Lights
Zepher,
I love your idea for the tail lights. I am undergoing the same project right now only I am incorporating 2003 Corvette Euro tail lights. So far I am creating my tail piece out of a 6" x 8" piece of wood. I am creating a shell out of the wood then I will fiberglass over the top to get it smooth.

On the 82...we are going to add subframes as well as a cage for strength when we do the targa conversion...
Any build up pics would be great. We will be starting on the 82 in the next few weeks and any pointers would be helpful. The plate you just cut...we were thinking about drilling out the spot welds and removing that whole piece.
You said you made the center section so you could take it in and out...I would love to see pick of that...Did you have to get more weather stripping for it? I would think there would be leak problems where the t-top courner is? We are in the brainstorm phase of...what to do with the top!
Also, when you have on the one piece unit where do you store it. Will it fit in the rear hatch? I would really love to go with a one piece unit, more to show it being a targa even with the top in...

82 project
Redraif,
I will look for more build up photos for you, just got to go through some cds to find them.
Drilling out welds:
As for drilling out the center section, The resason why I let those pieces in was it made it easier to fabricate a center lock down mechanism. What I did was mount one end of my latch to the cover that I made then welded the other end of the latch to the removable section. Plus I was able to mount up my dome light and reuse my headliner. I like saving money when I can!
The removable section:
I will take some photos of this for you and place them on the site in a few days. (My car is being fitted for the soft top that I spoke about). Basically what I did was reuse the black metal piece from the orginal t-tops. I shaved some of the metal off of the ends that wrap around the front and back. I kept the weatherstriping that was in this piece and placed some 1/2 inch weather striping on the bottom to make sure that there was no leaks where it married up to the windshield and the opposite end. When I latch in the removable section the latches clamp down the piece snug to the car.
One piece top:
The one piece top will fit in you rear hatch but you better not have any back seat passengers. You have to lay down the back seats to to fit it in. I usually store my top in the shop and make sure that rain is not in te forcast. The one piece top does look kick *** when it is on the car though, especially when you are in the car looking up and not seeing that ugly, fat stock center section.
Leaks:
As for leaks I have not a one. Just make sure that you have ample weatherstriping and tight fits.
If you need any help or want to bounce ideas off me just let me know.

"Tribaldaze, are you planning to go to the STARS show in Pensacola in March? If not, you should! We'll be there with RAIF."
LT1Guy,
Can you send me some info on the show. I would love to go. I haven't entered my car in any shows yet and I am starting to get the show fever!

If you can please keep me posted. Seems like the only F-body clubs and shows are in the northern part of the state. I would plan a road trip to the show though, sounds like fun.
