About the credit cards, it is stupid as hell to run them up when you do not have the cash in the bank to back it up. I have tried not to do that much at all but in order to buy somethings you need a credit card. Or atleast a debit card but then you need to raise the limit on that for a purchase. I did that with my crate motor, i bought that with cash, i just rasied my limit on the debit card at the bank for like $4k and used it to get the motor! It is very easy to fall into debt, if your greedy and not wise. Just ask my one freind who is a little over $10k in the hole. Damn he has some issues!

first car
1988 iroc-z 5.7 camaro, i paided 500 bucks, my parents paided the rest 2,500
i spent 300 on brakes and shocks and thats it, i wrecked it 5 months after it got on the road..
i actually made money on that from parting it out, 1,500 bucks
second car
got this about 3 months after i wrecked my iroc-z
1988 formula 350, i paided 2000 bucks, then another 300 bucks for a k&n filter and 3" inch cat back pipe, tranny mount and rear lower control arms... i was about to get a 2 grand paint job but about 4 weeks before someone hit me and wrecked it, i got roughly 3,400 from their insurance company, and then i sold the car for 800 bucks to someone. that car only lasted about 4 - 5 months
third car my 1991 formula 350, i paided 5,800 for it, out of pocket was 2,400 and the other 3,400 from that insurance company was used...
i spent about 740 bucks on mods/parts..
150 for foglights
80 bucks to transfer good tires on the rims
150 for rear rotors and pads
60 bucks for k&n filter and air foil..
220 bucks water pump, rad, rad cap, belt
20 bucks for power antenna and power door lock switch
60 bucks window motor
i dont know if i want to mod this car or not.... i think i should buy another thirdgen and mod that..
however, i do enjoy just driving the car, its a great daily driver!!
i am not in debt and i have no credit cards, i have to pay my way through college, and i have a crap load of money in my saving and some in my checking accounts.. i am 20 years old and still live with parents ..

Car: '91 RS

$4800 for my car, not perfect condition, but never abused.
$650 - paint
$100 - window motors
$50 - heater core/blower motor
$40 - shocks
$70 - brakes
$375 - tires
$50 - fuel pump/filter
$10 - ball joint
$350 - headers (not installed)
----------------------------------------
$4800 + $1695 = $6495 with more to come. Lots more. Think of it, guys - at least we're not, say, drinking all of this money, or using it for a variety of other bad habits. We do have something to show for it.

Initial=2500
total repair, licensing, tuneup, ect about 500-600
Total overall=3100 tops.
Not bad, she is still a bit on the ugly side (needs bodywork, mostly gfx repair, and paint.) but she runs and is fairly reliable (intermitant ignition problem every couple weeks). Also, chicks dig camaro's and firebirds. Even if they are a bit ugly.

1/4 of what my girls bring home for me on the weekends......!
the best points i can see would be being able to build something you love making it a constructive hobby, have it run faster than something new at half the price, these cars aren't seen in good shape everyday, and getting looks from the other guys girl!
the worst points would be the actual mods, everything either costs more than the average competition or isn't even available which leads to extensive originality and many hours on the phone and locked up in a shop making prototypes.
when i bought the car i liked the looks and enjoyed the power, but never thought it would go this far.......now i love everything about it.:hail:

Car: 85 IROC
Engine: LB9

hmm lets see
1400 for 85 IROC
1400 for complete brand new TPI 305
900 for heavy duty rebuild of 700r4
150 for rear end rebuild
180 for 4th gen seats
50 in used stock guages
100 for Hypercrap Thermomaster
I'm not gonna count regular maintenance and all the cussing and head scratching that results in trying to figure out what the moron who worked on it before me had done to it.

Car: 86 firebird
Engine: v6
Transmission: 7004r
..
price of car: trade in through ex-bf's.
(was engaged in 99 to a firebird fanatic and he trades his 78 trans-am for 86 firebird. And we decided it was mine. He got himself another firebird, and then left with his. Two months later i dated the man the car belong to orginially and got it my name. Then he vanished into thin air and i got the car!!!!!!! )
Very good deal for me. Considering he crashed three firebirds since then.
Now for the sad part.
Transmission cost: $1195.85
door handle for passenger side: $15
Water Pump: 40 for labor and $20 (avg)
Brakes: ? can't remember
Radiator: 149.00
New Radio: 75 wal-mart. To replace the nice expensive jvc that was in my car. Some little jerk stole it...
Pro Plus Muffler: 71.33
Headlight motors for ebay: 35 and don't work.
Tires: two new front tires 110.00 (235/60/15)
Tires: 1 used back tires (235/60/15) 26.63
Tires: 2 used back tires (215/60/15) 40.00
exhause manifold: 178.42 for the repair work.
Left Exhause Manifold: 50 from a local junk yard.
but considering i got her for a steal not bad....
still gathering info.

$3000 purchase ~ 3yrs ago 89 GTA
~$1000 wasted repaires (lack of tools/time/knowledge)
~$7000 mods (including new/rebuilt 350 and D-1SC)
Total ~ $11000 but still needs body work/paint(~2000)
So $13,000 still sounds a lot better than the $20,000+ sticker price.
Ran in sig before 350 or supercharger.(~$7000 total)
I can imagine for ~$12,000 more mods would make it perfect.

bought my beauty for 3500.....then let me bro drive her in the winter...BAD IDEA!!!.....some guy slamed into her in a dakota and totaled my entire rear end of her. So i decided to do a restoration on her. So far....new rear quarters....doors, fenders, bumpers, shock obsorber, headlight housings, Rear windshield, Tear drop hood, gas shocks for hood and hatch, mirrors, lights, paint, moldings, stripe kit and decals. The only thing i have left now is finish refinishing my rims and get my interior done which im doing this spring...just gotta save up a lil more. All in all though...with all receipts ive got right around $11,500 into her. Not counting my sound system i put into her...or any maintence ive done....or my tranny that just got done this past summer. That was $1200. I plan on hangin on her though...she was my first car....got her when i was 16.

Hmmnn...let's see here...
Price of the car: Free
Tax, Tag, and Title: about $40
Hedmen Hedders, Collector/reducers, 20 feet or so of flex pipe, dual exhaust tips, two glasspack mufflers: Free
Stereo From 1996 Impala: Free
Dead soft gaskets for collectors: $16
New water pump: $35
New Starter: $15-$20
Still needs: a little body work, interior work, a good cleaning, paint job, new carb, 350, new tires for the 16" rims, decent speakers, weatherstripping, shocks wouldn't hurt, etc, etc, etc....
Conversation with the wife went something like this: Me: "Yeah, I figure to drop about $6000-$7000 into it, possibly more, depending on what all I want to do to it... Her: "Are you CRAZY!!??" Me: "Well, it's either that, or spend about $25000-$35000 for a new car... take your pick!"
