LT1 Manifold Questions.

Hey guys. Seems that some of us have a few questions about using an LT1 manifold on old heads, LT1 heads, etc...

The issue I'm having is to use the LT1 manifold with LT1 heads on a GenI 350 Chevy block. I have my head gaskets from my 305 still sitting around. I am going to see what doesn't line up with what and see what I can do about it. This set-up I would like to do is not something I plan on doing right away anyways. Just very curious to how I can make it work. I know already that the bolts on the heads and the block already line up.

As for my egr problem, the ports on the LT1 manifold would be in the way from the distributor. The ports don't go through the heads. I got the heads and intake off a 96 Caprice cop car that was in the junk yard. Couldn't get the steel pipe that connects the manifold to the exhaust because I was late on getting other things from there. Someone took the block and exhaust manifolds before I could get back to see what else I could find. I had put the intake in the back seat of the car when I pulled the heads. The throttle body was also gone, but I am lucky that I have one in my garage. Any suggestions on what I can do with these items?

Re: LT1 Manifold Questions.

well, if the heads are cast iron (caprice will be cast iron), it's going to be very difficult to make them work on a stock block......

here is the link to someone that did this with aluminum heads. cast iron would be more difficult to work with due to welding.

unfortunately, the pics aren't there, maybe you can PM him and ask if he still has them.

it might be a better idea to just swap the whole engine(I know, you don't have the rest of it). if you don't need a/c, it will drop right onto the standard small block mounts.

Re: LT1 Manifold Questions.

Found that one last night. This morning, I used a set of head gaskets that I had off an engine and matched them up to the heads. I didn't see any of the coolant passages outside of the gasket surface. All were within the same holes. But, I'll contact tpi_roc about what he did and see what I can do for this. I haven't done anything yet, because it's not a necessary thing I have to do now. Just want to do something different and see where it can take me. More of a fun project than a "have to be done now" type thing.

Thanks for the help. Much apprieciated.

Re: LT1 Manifold Questions.

A/C is a MUST here in AZ. Our 120 degree summers make it miserable in the summer if we want to drive them. Cast iron isnt difficult to weld if you know someone who knows what they are doing. HMMMmmm, I want to see this done...

Re: LT1 Manifold Questions.

Here's what I found tonight. I see where the water passages need to be welded shut. On the very corners where the block curves in from the lifter valley. The heads overhang there and that is where the water passage is. Lucky for me, my dad is a certified welder and can put plugs in there and make it a little recessed so the heads do not need to be plained. Will probably see what we can do around Thanksgiving when he is home. Will keep you posted on how it comes along at that time.
