ThirdgenUSA. Feel a little irked.

So I've been keeping my eye out for a GTA Digital Dash to ****** for my next potential project idea in the future. I found one on Ebay with ThirdgenUSA for 180 bucks. I was ready to buy it but the description said two of the buttons were "messed up". So I shot him a message asking him to clarify what he meant by that. He told me they were messed up appearance wise and that he has not actually bench tested the unit, and has no idea if it works or not. So at that point 180 seemed steep for a gamble. I asked if he could atleast hook it up to power and ground to show it atleast powers up. He told me that "all the work that would go into testing it" would raise the price. I felt slightly insulted by that. I even said if there were some issues that could be fixed by an electronics place I'd still be interested. He seems to have a good standing rep on here from what I searched, and his Ebay score is perfect, so what gives with that? I feel like raising the price to prove that it works to someone who's more than willing to spend an already large sum with him is quite ridiculous. Any other opinions or experiences out there?

How much is the going rate for a tested and functional one?

I'm not sure how one would go about putting a specified value on these. I didnt even want him to fully test it, I expect a digital read out to be touchy at that age and maybe need some repair (hell, my info center on my 2002 is finicky), but not including that in the description is kinda odd to me. All I wanted was 12 volts and ground to see if it powered up. Thats like 6 or 8 wires to just get that going, everything else is just gauge inputs. I don't feel that'd be enough to justify boosting the price up even more. If I wanted all the gauges tested and info center tested, then hell yeah charge 300 bucks or more for a perfect unit. But one with some minor wear and no confirmation that it even works in the slightest is not worth 180 to me. There is another one on ebay right now that is missing the info center and he states it does not work for 70 dollars.

I get your point, like buying an engine you can't hear run.

Sounds like he isn't very confident it will work so he would rather sell it for $180 as untested rather than $80 for not working.

To do a digital dash swap, there is more to it than just the dash. The entire wire harness is different than regular Firebird gauges... There are sensors on the doors that tell you that the door or hatch is open and stuff... It is definitely not plug and play.

I'm well aware of that. I was just trying to gather parts for a project I wanna do a few years from now.

Big thumbs up for ThirdgenUSA. Shipped a non ac heater box to me in the UK. He couldn't have been more helpful.

And that's exactly why I started this thread, everyone has good things to say about him. Hell, I'd probably still buy from him, I just had an (I wouldn't say bad) odd experience and wanted to see what anyone else thought or if they ran into a similar situation. Greetings from Montana btw! Cool to see a fellow 3rd genner in the UK!

If you're interested in doing an analog to digital swap, check out the thread I created. I did a step by step on how to do it. Mine has been up and running for 2 years now and my car was originally analog. It's definitely not a simple swap but it can be done.
