Need A New Starter !!!

So my (brand new) summit racing mini starter just took a crap on me. Im really pissed. I've only had this starter for 3 months and being I only drive my car once every 2 weeks or soo its unacceptable. Ive started it literally about 10 times. Im sick of summit racing brand parts. I dont know why i keep setting myself up for failure buying there sh*t.. (Ok rant over, sorry). Does anyone know of a really good dependable starter that will turn a hot supercharged engine over with no problem. Any input is appreciated!

starter for a 96 LT1 camaro. gear reduction, lighter and if it craps out (unlikely) you can take it back to the local parts store for a new one.

Bingo! Those starters were meant for engines with 10.6:1 compression ratio and are a "mini" style, they are the Nippondenso or 'Denso starter. You may have to alter your power cables because the terminals are in a slightly different spot. I ran an aftermarket denso for 10+ years in multiple built engines with long tube headers before it finally failed. Good starter at was quieter than my current PowerMaster/Hitachi style starter.

Here is a good thread I was recently in:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...g-my-buck.html

What headers and compression ratio do you currently have?

Re: Need A New Starter !!!

Thanks for the info guys. I didnt know the Lt1 starter was a mini style. (Tibo) The engine is now low compression. Should be 9.5:1 and im running dougs 1 3/4 primary long tubes. Me and my brother just changed the pistons yesterday and a few other things to accomidate boost!

Re: Need A New Starter !!!

This is good info guys, Thank you!!! So you guys think a '95 Corvette may be the best??? I read the thread.
Or is the '96 F-body the one. And on that note, is it different than the '93-'95 and '97 starters, or are they all the same??

Re: Need A New Starter !!!

AC Delco 336-1148 is what I bought for my 92 Z28. The large positive power wire had to be detached from a bracket on the passenger frame rail to get a little more slack, the plastic flywheel shield had to be trimmed a little, and a small amount of plastic between the terminals on the starter had to be cut away with a Dremel. The LT1 starter is smaller, lighter, and so much easier to maneuver in and out of position.

Re: Need A New Starter !!!

I did the lt1= mounting part of case broke.
I went tuff stuff next= impossible to align properly. not sure why but the splines on starter where off 2/3 of the time. no amount of shims fixed it.

now I use powermaster. love it. 1.5 years no issues. it was only 180ish $

Re: Need A New Starter !!!

There is another type, I think the late 4th gen Corvette starter? It's a little more expensive, also a ministarter. A little more compact. Anyway, as far as I can recall, it's rebuildable. The LT1 starter is not. So if you get the 96 corvette starter, you can actually rebuild it when it takes a **** on you. I have a pile of LT1 starters. I Finally got a Skip White starter, likely the same as your summit one, it's holding on for now, but I dont have high hopes even though it's lasted a couple of years.
