Starter Motor?

Starter Motor?
Hi -
To make a long story short, I have
a 350 (now 383) in my 88 IROC-Z.
The only starter that fits is for the 305.
Any idea on the Mini Starters or ???
Thank you.
Chuck

Re: Starter Motor?
I would call "Summit Racing" and talk to there tech department.
They have never let me down.
Exhalent service/prices/shipping cost is usually nothing with a very small handling fee.
They stand behind there products and its one of the top suggested sites on this forum.
If you do end up with a full size starter be sure to rap it in a thermal blanket.
I still have one from AutoZone that is over 7 years old because of the blanket.

Re: Starter Motor?
you could count them.
but basically on stock starters, the 153 tooth uses the straight across bolt pattern.
the 168 tooth uses the staggered pattern.
some mini starters can fit both sizes.
just an example of a mini starter that can fit both sizes. theres many different brands.

Re: Starter Motor?
Stock external balanced 383 will have the larger 168 tooth flexplate (I am guessing it is automatic?) and uses the staggered stock starter. That is why most 400 blocks only have two starter bolts in staggered configuration as they are external balanced.
Aftermarket roller assemblies can have either internal or external balancing depending on what was purchased. You can have a 168 tooth internal or external balanced flexplate. 153 tooth will only be internal balanced.
The larger 168 tooth flexplate will not have much clearance in the transmission.
