Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

Hi guys
Might have got a fluke.. but today I just returned a Stand Motor Product MAF Sensor Model # STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS MF4712N that I purchased mail-order from Rock Auto.com. The MAF cost $180 not including shipping and lasted only about 13 months on my 87 IROC LB- 9. Just sent it back under warranty (3 yr) for an exchange-- we will see how it goes with the replacement when I get it in about a week.

QUESTON: Have any of you guys tried this specific MAF sensor and what were your results. (This way I know what I am STUCK with since no refund)....

PS- I have seen a lot of posts on this board about different MAF brands and what seems to work with these cars. Unfortunately the warranty only replaces with the same item # or else I would go with a "wire" Bosch unit...

Symptoms: SES light, noticed that car would die going from park to reverse and sometimes from park to drive... couple weeks later started getting hesitation on warm up/weird idle. A month later total misfire and engine surge. Replaced with my old Bosch backup and all these symptoms completely disappear and car runs fine. the only mod on the IROC was the inclusion of "Air Boxes" for cold air with stock air filters and the MAF screen was still in place. I tried cleaning the bad MAF with CNC MAF cleaner multiple times and no change-- still bad... The MAF sensor ran good for about 10 months before "symptoms" started to surface...

Re: Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

Non OEM MAF have been a problem since they have become available.

Also with a few exceptions, most early MAF sensors are not the best from the get go even when they were new back in the day.

Someone will chime in here but I believe someone did try to make a quality MAF for the earlier cars at some point. Was that ever followed thru on?

Re: Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

I'm curious too.
I've done some research on Standard and decided to use the BWD (Borg Warner Davidson )products to replace electrical/electronic parts on my car.
Its O'reilly's Auto parts top end selection and have no complaints.
Standard is a huge company and state of the art facilities putting out quality products rebadged as parts from Napa Auto Echlin Line. etc. etc.

Does not mean their perfect though.

Re: Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

Yes agree totally.
Of course just got e-mail from Rock Auto stating that the particuliar MAF that I am returning-- they no longer carry it.. So they will make a "credit" for me and I have a few options to choose from. I will be going with the AC DELCO Remanf over another Standard Motor Products MAF. The ACDELCO is the "bosch hot wire" style instead of the "new and improved" version.

QUEStION--- I noticed that on some of the MAF options that they are ASTRO LEAGUE in price for an OEM.. I mean $750-1000 bucks.. Gimme a break. I am also noticing that IMPORT sport sedan mafs (MBW, Mercedes, Infiniti) MAFs are less than 1/2 that price!!!!! What is this exploitation because the TPI cars are "collectible"????????????????????????????

More likely its a "Niche" market that is drying up and small, limited production runs of the parts keep the prices high.

That being said in the near future you may not even be able to get a New or Remanufactured MAF for your car, regardless of the price because it is obsolete and out of production. Some of the other sensors on these cars, like the EGR diagnostic temperature switch and early EGR solenoids are being discontinued by everyone.

I recently had to replace the MAF on my 97 Express and picked up a new Delphi MAF for 98.00+ shipping from RockAuto. Talk about lucking out on a replacement.

Re: Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

Ricks camaro still sells egr temp sensor. I've had to replace mine, it was a new part. As for MAF im in the same boat, been dealing with cardone... Now I know better... Total junk. I work for autozone and can get a Duralast... New.... MAF. Just have to pay the difference. I'll let ya know. Prolly crap but it beats the hell out of $350 for one from orileys.

Re: Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

For 1000 you could convert to an OBD2 computer and be able to use the mafs on 98-02 f-bodies ... or convert to speed density and eliminate the maf

if you want to stay stock then you might have to dish it out and hope it is a good quality piece

Re: Standard Motor Prod MAF sensor- RETURN!

Wells Su-145 Maf is still available at rockauto for about $108 shipped. This one of the best aftermarket Mafs available, higher flowing then stock and not the hot wire design either, it use a film sensor. I just had to replace my 14 year old Wells with a new one and their is NO Changes in the design. They are worth if you need a new Maf.
