Radiator Cap temp gauge

Hello all.. found this a few months ago at O'Reileys and installed it. Seems to be pretty accurate and being from Mr Gasket I feel comfortable enough to trust it. Found it on ebay for $45 and at the store for $24. Anyone here using it...? Stone

I see them at the car shows, mostly used on the street rods.I've never herd of any complaints about them.

Re: Radiator Cap temp gauge

What would you use that for? That seems to be more of a niche item, used mostly for engines that are stationary or while tuning a carb or something. That is the only time I can think of when you would need a coolant gauge under hood.

Re: Radiator Cap temp gauge

Last summer I had an issue with my engine overheating.. I didn't trust the 25 year old gauge so I saw this radiator cap and was just a 2nd way of checking my water temp. Also was a good way of seeing what temp(s) the fans were coming on.. but basically it's a "peace of mind" thing. Stone

I have one, so I don't need to keep running back to the dash to watch the temperature while tuning in the pits.

i might have to try one of them? i'm still using the factory gauge and have no clue how acurate it is.

You will get a different temperature between the two but don't automatically blame the factory gauge and think it's inaccurate. If you have plastic radiator filler tanks that gauge will likely report the lowest temp. The factory gauge sensor is located in the bottom of the cylinder heads which is one of if not the hottest parts of the coolant system. The ecm coolant sensor is in the top of the manifold and will be cooler but still heat soak a bit. That sensor will be farthest from the hot engine so it will heat soak the least and the plastic tanks are relatively thin to disapate heat. My Speedhut coolant sensor and gauge in the cylinder head are always different from the MegaSquirt gauge and sensor in the top of the intake.

Re: Radiator Cap temp gauge

yea, i'm using the sensor in the head. its an aluminum rad. i built this motor about 8 years ago for a truck, and it ran 170ish all day long in the florida heat. but i think i had the sensor in the intake manifold then? i can still run close to that temp if i leave the e-fans on continuosly. i do have the air-dam in place. somebody suggested buying one of those infared temp guns to double check the temps/gauge acuracy. the cap or another gauge might not be a bad idea? i just changed the waterpump and flushed the coolant system the other day. hopefully i'll notice an improvement when i get back on the road.

I have aluminum heads, intake and radiator, still different readings.

I bought the infrared gun last year, the 86 and 33 were reading very high but they were running really well,so I checked it with the gun and both cars were off by about 25-30 degrees,it was a real relief knowing that and it really gives you piece at mind knowing what the real temp is.

Where did you put the laser? Aiming the laser and reading the surface temp of the cylinder head is only an indicator of coolant temp. The surface is likely the coolest part and obtaining a reading that is lower than the gauge is almost expected. The surface with the closest reading to the coolant temp would probably be the lower radiator hose as it's low to avoid heat rising past it, between the two large heat sinks and the coolant is moving easily there.
