Re: air intake
What kind of a air intake are you looking for ? There's the one that looks like the one above for TBI or a Open Air Element like mine.

Go be honest, I'm not toally sure what I want. I've only had my camaro for about a month now. originally in wanted a short ram/cold air intake, but after looking at my engine and some pictures I don't know if I can do a short ram/cold air intake. And your is super nice, but how much HP do you get from it cause it doesn't look like its in an area that will provide much airflow.

Re: air intake
IMO there are three basic versions of air intakes for a TBI.The"CAI" that has cold air taken in using a filter that is placed at the end of a snorkel/piping and is placed at the front of the bay preferably in a cold air area with a bonnet on the TBI unit.
Then there’s a stock TBI intake that is very restrictive and is like pulling air through a straw. Then there’s the Open Air Intake like the one I have.Mines kind of a high bread version of a basic unit because it pulls cold air from a cowl hood opening. The main part is a 14x 3in. filter that although pulling warm/hot air from the bay it pulls a lot of it . When you have a nice Cowl hood like mine you use the intake I have chosen or whats the point of having the cowl.
This is probable my favorite type of cold air intake for a TBI using a stock fuel injected cars cold air intake unit and a bonnet on the TBI to accept the snorkel.
Keep in mind that there are many variations of the intakes I have mentioned.

Re: air intake
There is a 2% difference in hp from using cold air instead of hot, and that's only if both flow the same amount. On a stock TBI, that's maybe 2hp.

Re: air intake
In that case giving the TBI more than enough air is the name of the game. I know you must also add a free flowing exhaust system to see any real results but how much HP do you think is being free'd up by just replacing the stock TBI unit ?

as stated hot vs cold is not a huge factor on a stock TBI, you are only seeing 170 HP stock, less than that at the wheels
Ron's setup also is utilizing a cowl induction hood, which has an area the air cleaner sits up in, meaning cooler air drawn from the cowl area, you will also notice he has an Xtreme(or similar) air filter top, he's drawing air from every possible direction, its more than enough air flow, even for a mildly built 350
Don't forget to do exhaust(i would honestly work on this first)
if you want to see bigger gains, look into intake manifolds, a cam, head work or new heads, and some tuning equipment
and don't worry about the "why waste money on a 305" crowd, they have a valid point, but its your car, so it's your decision, there are plenty of guys still willing to help out the 305 crowd

Re: air intake
.
Your right, it’s a Summit Racing "Power Lid" with a Spectre 3x14in.filter below. I believe it was close to $90.00 total. I actually received it as a B-Day present 6 years ago. What I loved about it right away is that the color went well with the bay and paint.
I’ve seen the bottom of the Spectre lid and the Summit lid is built much stronger.
In this photo you can see the chrome air filter on the valve cover for the PCVsystem. It replaces the stock tube that went from there to the side of the stock air cleaner.

Re: air intake
If you want the filter top you're better off buying the whole assembly that includes the base as well.
The spectre is OK but the K&N seem to be the most popular.
The only breather that needs to be dealt with is the hose that comes from the valve cover up and into the side of the stock air cleaner assembly. If you look at the photo it shows a chrome air breather that replaces the stock hose on the valve cover. Heres what it looks like on my car. =

Re: air intake
K&N does flow the best. That's because they use less filtering material. Meaning you get more air AND more dirt into your engine.

Re: air intake
There's nothing wrong with paper filters. They let in plenty of air with the proper size tubing and flow. I haven't used a spectre, but I do avoid K&N filters and the edelbrock triangles of death.

Theres a ton of threads about K&N vs Paper on this site and I have read MANY of them. I believe the cotton gauze type filters as well as a paper but flows better.
Heres what K&N has to say. Believe it or don't, that's up to you.

Yes I agree with Ron. I've heard alot about how good and bad K&N filters are. I guess ill just have to do some research before I buy a filter.

Re: air intake
I like the open top of that filter, will kn air filter fit with that lid? and also what if it rains, won't the water flow in? I been wanting a cowl hood because of that, but if I can somehow manage more air to my carb, then I rather have stock iroc than cowl

Re: air intake
As far as cowl hoods go some have open backs with no screen, some have the screen. Some have a completely open underside and some have a hole like mine. There are even some fiberglass cowl hoods that you need to cut the back out to open up the cowl. As far as rain is concerned the cowl weather-stripping on the base/back/underside of the stock hood is transferred to the new hood (at least mine did on the Goodmark brand of cowl hood) and that seals the base. Honestly I have never heard of a person complaining about rain getting into the bay through the actual cowl opening .
Here’s the K&N open air element you will want if you decide to go that way.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/knn-66-3040/overview/
Also I Googled "Camaro open Cowl hoods" and this is what came up. Strange enough there are even some photos of my car in there.(red with black stripes)You have to click on images to see the hoods. =

Honestly I have never heard of a person complaining about rain getting into the bay through the actual cowl opening .
Here’s the K&N open air element you will want if you decide to go that way.

Also I Googled "Camaro open Cowl hoods" and this is what came up. Strange enough there are even some photos of my car in there.(red with black stripes)You have to click on images to see the hoods. =

Re: air intake
.Instead of me posting more images of the Goodmark hood take a look at these photos in this link as you scroll down and just click on them to see them full size.Mines the shiny red one with the wide black racing stripes with hood pins just like the one in my signature below.(the hood gap has been fixed).=
