GRANT HORN BUTTON ???

i have a grant challenger 4 spoke steering wheel on my car . i have had it on for several years and love it . i know many others have the same wheel . my question is about the horn button . when i get on the horn sometimes the button pops off . then the horn keeps blowing till i dis-connect the wire under the button . it is installed properly , and turned CW about 1/8th of a turn . has anyone else had this problem ? is there any kind of a fix ? i suppose i can just live with it , it's only a small PITA . but , a PITA that i can live without . anyone ???

Re: GRANT HORN BUTTON ???

take a pair of pliers and bend the button in at each of the retention tabs, not much, just a little bit. What happened in my case, is as the button was installed or removed a couple times, the pc board started to break a bit, bending the tabs in to make it a little tighter fit seems like its made it a whole lot better.

Re: GRANT HORN BUTTON ???

I bet it has more to do with the age of the wheel, or how often the horn button has been pulled off. Mine is 4 years old or so, and has been pulled off 5 or 6 times I would guess. Once it starts popping off on its own, it just gets easier and easier to pop off, until it gets to the point where you can't get the button to stay on.

Re: GRANT HORN BUTTON ???

The female end of the wire that connects to the male lead on the grant plate came off. If that little female connector touches metal the horn will sound. So there I am with my horn blaring in a parking lot until I could get to the wire. After that I used shrink tubing all the way to the end of the female connector and made sure it was on the male connector good and tight. That way even if the horn button comes off it will not blast me and everyone around me.Then I bent in the tabs on the cap just enough to here a "click"when installing it on that darn green plate that operates the horn. I just placed the cover around and over the very edge of the green plate and pushed ever so gently until you hear that "click". Without a horn you will be helpless watching as some one backed into you.Find a way to make it work even if you have to send off for another horn assembly.

Re: GRANT HORN BUTTON ???

As simple a part of the car this was it sure became a real pita. For those who either have a car that has vibrates a bit or travels rough roads the button becomes a problem due to the fact that the spring under the button is forcing the horn button indents to hold on to the fiber board. I decided to take the spring out and put small foam pieces (weather stripping foam) underneath the contact board. Now its easy to put the button on using the little indents and even if the button comes off and it hasn't since the negative force has been removed, the contact board is still separated from the steering wheel by the foam.

Re: GRANT HORN BUTTON ???

Smart Idea . Beautiful car
I was raised on a small farm in PA until about 12. A little One gas station/bar town called Perkiomenville. That's where I first learned to shoot and ride a dirt bike. Great place to be raised.
