Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet

Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
Looking for feedback on these. Has anyone used one for a while and still have their eyesight? Looking for feedback on these helmets only, not Harbor Freight itself.
They are going on sale soon for $39.99 so I thought I would try one out. My face shield is getting melted and covered with spatter.

Re: Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
When I was in the welding program at the technical college a little while ago, Harbor Freight's auto-darkening helmets were actually recommended by the instructor as the best "bang for your buck" helmet. I never used one though, I got mine from summit racing.
If you're getting that much spatter on yourself, you may want to try to reposition yourself while you're welding
--Edit: The helmet I'm referring to was an adjustable shade, that feature is well worth the money. I'll NEVER go back to a fixed shade

Re: Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
Honestly, I used one here and there for a few years, and thought it wasn't that bad until the autodarkening failed, and then I bought one on sale ($44.99) from Northern tool. Then I realized how bad the harbor freight one sucked. The Northern one lightens up a lot more and can see what I'm doing much much better then with the HF model. And no problems with my eyes...yet lol.

Re: Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
I have used one for about 8 years. Most of my original HF tools have long been replaced by better quality items. This is one of the last ones I still use. My only complaint about the HF auto darkening welding helmet is that the mechanism to tighten the helmet to hold it snug to your head keeps slipping.

I've been using one for about 4 years, never had a problem with it. I did replace the protective screen in the front once, my fault for being too close though.

Re: Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
I used to use standard helmets, until I got a job that supplied auto-darkening ones at work. Loved it!
So U snagged one of those HF ones (black w/goofy sticker flames?) & the only complaint I have on it, is the green lens. Not being clean, just dark, takes getting used to, instead of just clear & dark. But I love it, none-the-less.
I peeled the goofy flames off one day, at a club Car Fix Day. One guy was harassing me, giving me grief about them. So they found their way onto his vert! LOL

Re: Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
Hafta leave the HF one in the sun though, or it'll die. Won't HOLD a charge.
When I leave mine inside too long, the battery on it dies & I hafta recharge it.

Re: Harbor Freight autodarkening welding helmet
i used mine for 4 years and then the last 5 semesters of welding school. replaced the outer plastic window lens do to too much splatter damage, and it's still working great. i wish the side ***** were better designed because it doesn't stay in the up position very well, but i take it off if i'm not welding in the next few minutes or push it up once... no big deal.
