if this is in wrong area , mods. please move . a while back i saw a post on homebrew penetrating oil . the brew was 50% acetone & 50% ATF . has any one tried this ? if so results ? i will soon be installing my new headers soon so i want/need a good penetrant . i'm a retired acft. mech. so i have used all the others on the market . has anyone tried this homebrew ??? thanks .

I have never tried the homebrew stuff...have you used the new freeze-off from CRC industries? www.crcindustries.com I have had good luck with it

I've used PB blaster, Gibbs, and Kroil. They are all alot better than wd40 and other off the shelf stuff. Gibbs is like $15 and kroil is in a tiny can thats like 10$.

Go to a old enginge/ag equipment show. After that old iron has sat in the woods for 80+ years, 99% of the people will say gibbs and kroil is gaurranteed to loosen it up.

...i sell PB blaster at my store(i work for Fastenal Corp.) so im partial to the PB blaster lol...but it is amazing stuff...i use wd40 for spraying the bees and maybe the blades of my mower but thats about it...ive had very good luck with PB blaster and also Kroil is amazing stuff. If PB blaster wont do it, which is rare, use Kroil.

Never heard of that. PB Blaster and Kroil oil has always done well for me.

I believe Permatex has a form of the Freeze off as well....PB Blaster and some light tapping to get it working and a little wait time usually works.....the freeze off works way quicker as it freezes the rusty part and causes micro cracks and then it has a capillary action like PB to get in there...good stuff.

I have sold the Loctite brand of the freeze off to a few of my top customers. Seeing how Loctite is very expensive(But very good) its hard to get the general public to try it, hence only larger companies trying it. I personally have not used it but have amazing reviews on it...i guess from what a local farmer told me is that its just basied off an old method of freezing parts, he said that there is an old trick to use a gas(i forget which one) to freeze parts that are stuck that way you dont have to heat up the area and cause a fire.

If you can find ZEP45 it's the best I have found, However the "Homebrew" I have used was kerosine and ATF. I used it to get a short block that had been left out in the weather for a while. It worked but I had to soak each bank of cyl's or about a week. I think the main resaon for this combo is that it wont evaporate like some others will if left out. I dont think it would be good for Getting stuck manifold bolts loose, but I have never used it in this fashion. So I dont know for sure. ZEP45!

we use zep45 in my engines class and its awesome, ive used pb blaster at home though and thats good too. never used kroil or freeze off. i have used liquid wrench though, and its pretty good too.

I like the PB Blaster too, and the Kroil stuff is great. I would caution how you mix the homebrew stuff tho. Acetone is a pretty nasty chemical, so eye protection and rubber gloves if using it. A lot of my family are painters by trade, more than one of them going through some big health issues due to the chemicals absorbed through the skin.

Very true. You got to be careful when working with even "week" chemicals over a period of time. my dads cousin is a good tractor mechanic. For years he washed his hands off with brake cleaner, now he has NO feeling left in his hands.

Well if you're anything like me and enjoy mixing/fabricating things yourself...very satisfying in my opinion, I would just mix some up and test it out on something? You could test it before your project, and if it doesn't work to your satisfaction, you can just buy something off the shelf for your project. I prefer "Buster" myself. Can't find it everywhere, but the best stuff that I've ever used.

PB Blaster FTW! Everyone told me that when i did my fuel filter that the fittings would be really hard to get off. I bought PB Blaster and 2 days prior to doing the job I soaked both fittings each day.right before taking the fittings off i tapped them with the wooden side of the hammer (due to the fuel and not wanting to blow myself up). Long story short, the fittings came off so easy.

Yeah, we just got some at work. tried it and nothing seemed to happen but low and behold it sure as hell worked on a VERY stubborn bolt

i've had good results with gm heat valve lubricant. you can pick it up from your local gm dealer.

runs somewhere around 10 bucks a can.

i use rust check in a red can, with great sucess. anyone else try/hear of this type? i have never seen the blaster, krall or the freeze stuff around where i am so i can't comment on thoes.

I was going to say the same thing, that stuff works great. I worked at a gm dealer for years and have a good stock pile in my garage, that's all we ever used at work for rusty parts. +1

You guys gotta try this stuff its called "FREE ALL", i just started using it at work and its unbelievable, pb blaster is useless compared to it. I took bolts out with it that i knew i would have to torch came out with ease, only thing the fumes from it are pretty noxious thats how u know its good though.

Never tried kroil or heard of it except here but try this stuff if you can get it, id say it works probably 10x better than pb blaster.
