Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

92 formula,

Your avitar rocks it man !!!

I will have to throw a rock into the AC Delco Basket. Haven't had a problem with them so far. I'm sure that k and n is good too. Just no cheap stuff. It is your car and with all that time we all spend working on them thats the last thing you want to do is skimp on something that filters the oil in your engine

I just started using K & N and I like it so far. Fram is garbage and most people know it.

Sorry to bump this 9 year old thread...

Thank you for that last picture - I couldn't remember how high the mount was and how much clearance the filter has. It's been a year since I changed my oil in my Camaro, and I have changed the oil in many other vehicles since then, so I couldn't remember how much room there was for the oil filter.

---

I believe the last filter I put on my Camaro was the Wix equivalent to the PF454. I am, however, currently interested in upsizing. Now I know I can use the PF1218 size without issue; however, I did find an interesting post from someone who said they fit the PF932 on their car, and actually that is what sparked me to join this site (as well as seeing Kruss's picture above) to ask about oil filter clearance:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...ml#post1845932

I did send the user a PM, of course, but I thought I could also post about it before getting a response to the PM as well.

Can anyone else clarify if the PF932 can truly be used on a 305 without being too low or having clearance issues?

Thanks,

~ Triton

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

Since I replied into this thread 9 years ago I have switched to using either one of two filters, The K&N filter everybody has already mentioned or the new Fram Ultra line of filters- their XG5. There is a really good write up with tests from another website I'll post a link to. Basically the guy cut apart every oil filter and gave results on everything, number of pleats, amount of filter material, check valve, seal type, it went on.

EDIT: Here is the website I was referring to: http://www.gmtruckcentral.com/articl...lterstudy.html

Well tbh, I am actually aware of that; I'm a member of BITOG and have gathered alot of knowledge about oil and filters from there over time... I've seen many filter cut open, etc., and in fact I'm actually using a Fram XG on my truck right now. But, due to my slight obsession with gaining knowledge about what filters can fit which vehicles... I'm asking this both for the sake of nuance and for the fact that I might use the PF932 (if I get clarification it can fit for sure) for the sake of raising the total oil capacity for my Camaro.

Take a look see here to find where my interest in this began:

Mobil 1 # M1 302 Extended Performance Engine oil Filter.
Its the "Tall" Filter . Fits my Camaro perfectly.

I also use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Synthetic Engine Oil.
Both are EXALENT products.

1)Effectively removes contaminants, with a 99.6 percentage Multi-Pass Efficiency Rating and an advanced synthetic fiber blend media

2)Holds double the contaminants compared to other filters, with 28.0 grams of total capacity

3)Withstands nine times normal system operating pressure, for exceptional protection up to 615 pascals per square inch

I exclusively use the Wix 51060 (tall filter) with my Formula paired with standard Castrol GTX 10w-30 changed every 2500-3000 miles.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I see this is a old thread.
Discontinue the use of delco filters asap, they went to junk internals several yrs ago. (ran delco 1218s and lost 2 motors due to the filters failing about 5 yrs ago)

Wix racing, napa gold, K&N and a few other still use the internals.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

What's really funny is, no one has mentioned the filter is just a 15% filter, (they are not a full flow type) after the pressure reaches a certain point the bypass opens and the oil goes straight to the internals. so any filter will do just fine.

I was of the belief that the pressure was 65 or 70 psi and you only got there with really thick oils or when the oil was cold. Other than those times it filters normally.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

If you're going to use AC filters, I would avoid the "E-Core" design. AC makes most of the popular applications in the old, "classic" design as well as the E-Core design. AC filters that have part numbers with an "E" suffix are E-Cores. But this is only true with filters where they make both styles. Open the box and look down the hole to confirm.

We can talk "made to so-and-so" specifications, but at one time Super Tech filters were made by the same manufacturer that made AC filters; Champion. Identical construction and at the time, rated highly by public opinion on BITOG.

Take a look at this Super Tech (ST3614) E-Core filter that was manufactured by the same folks that manufactured AC filters.

Name: ST3614001.jpg
Views: 1611
Size: 48.7 KB

Name: ST3614002.jpg
Views: 1591
Size: 32.0 KB

Name: ST3614006.jpg
Views: 3140
Size: 66.9 KB

This filter came off my '98 LS400. Unfiltered oil is one thing. But I wonder how far that piece of filter media would have traveled should it have broken off and started circulating through the oil system before plugging something up?

The E-Core center support enhances flow, but IMO unsupported media on the downstream side of oil flow isn't a good idea. There's no fail safe for torn away media.

It's good to revisit old threads. Lots of things change as time goes by.

Edit: BTW, for my Japanese imports, I use Denso filters. For my GM domestics, Baldwin.

All I used too until I ran out of my stock of old Delco filters, bought a case of new 1218 classics and then lost 2 motors within 500 miles on each one.
Returned the rest of them and got Wix racing to replace them. They are black, just like the original filter from the factory.

I used to religiously use AC Delco products but like most say, it's not the same quality anymore. K&N oil filters have been good products on both my Camaro and 2001 Explorer Sport.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

Here is a little info I dug up researching oil filters and oil brands when I had the same questions, anything with a 3+ rating are considered to be top quality filters, anything below your getting what you pay for, personally I use either the Royal Purple rated at 3.09 (high rating and yeah it's a brand name thing and it looks cool, I like purple that's the color of my motorcycle too Royal Purple), the highly rated Mobil 1 filter at 3.27 if I can find it or the Fram Extended Guard rated at 3.49, not necessarily in that order, never had a problem with any, but you be the judge of which is best for you, I have heard many complain about the Fram filters but you have to remember there are several levels of Fram available, buying the cheapest Fram is like buying any generic filter, anyway that's my 2 cents.

Forgot to mention with the Royal Purple you get top quality filtration and construction but because of the reduced filtration surface area you have to change them more often, most recommend 5000 KMs which is fine, checking your oil and contamination lever (is it really dirty) is best way to tell if the filter is in need of changing in my opinion, we all know that oil breaks down over time and looses viscosity and must be replaced before engine wear and damage occurs, but with the new synthetics they last twice as long so lubrication isn't an issue but the oil itself still get dirty when the filter is saturated with contaminants and that what will ruin your bearings. Now back to original search "Headers for my 1982 Z28" hahaha me searching this board is like a kid with ADD in a classroom, everything distracts me, "Hey look a squirrel" hahaha

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

Cool I see we both do our homework, I found this around Jan 2015 just after my nephew smoked his motor in his 2006 Mazda 6, because he was buying cheepo oil filters and neglecting his oil changes, I spent 40 hours doing a Ford Fusion 3.0L to Mazda 6 swap to get him back on road and tucked a copy of this in his dash so next time some 11/hr greesemonkey tells him his noname filter is as good as any brand filter he would know the difference, now he buys his own filter and oil and has it changed regularly, anyway didn't see your link and though posting the info might be useful to anyone reading this thread, so sorry for that, my bad. That site has a ton of good info I didn't know and was curious about (and I have been spinning wrenches for 24 years now and taking the suppliers word for their product in comparison to others) when it come to filters and oil, EVERYONE reading this thread should follow Tibo's link and read all the info there, seriously.

I don't think it is that high, I have seen guys plug that bypass and blow the filter off the car.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

Mobil 1 M1-203 came in second to Fram that came in first in that chart ?
The Mobil 1 is pricy but I don't really see that as a factor if your looking for the best filter.

I must see what's in that Fram XG5 Extended Guard. The XG5 is just the automobile application.

There are some cool comparison video here starting with this one.The Mobil 1 is after that.

Thanks for the video Ron.

Interestingly, the Fram site does not list an Xtended Guard filter.

But, ALL of the filters on their site seem to share ALL of the construction points that this reviewer likes. The only variable is the media, and the addition of "tiny time pills" (if you're old enough to get that reference) in the High Mileage filter.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I noticed that the Mobil 1 M1-203 filter does not have a bypass valve.
Is that a new feature ?

It looks like there are quiet a few that are built that way.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

SBC's have the bypass built into the oil filter adapter. Some plug/block the stock bypass to force full flow filtration.

Forcing all the oil through the filter is one thing but I think that the oil system still needs some kind of bypass in case the filter should ever become plugged, even if the chance of this is remote.

My limited understanding (I'm usually wrong) is that the intent of blocking the stock bypass is to increase the pressure at which bypass occurs, essentially forcing full flow filtration and still be able to run a bypass valve.

This is done by blocking the low pressure bypass in the adapter (7psi - 12psi?) and installing an oil filter with a higher, built-in bypass that opens at say, 20psi; such as a Fram HP4 or a Baldwin B279.

Remember, bypass pressure isn't what's seen on the gauge on the dash. It's the pressure drop that exists across the filter.
